(Phoenix, AZ) A woman was seriously injured in a 43rd Avenue crash Sunday evening, April 19, after being struck by a vehicle.

Officers responded around 7:15 p.m. to the area near 43rd Avenue and Thomas Road following reports of a pedestrian collision. When they arrived, they found a woman suffering from serious injuries and immediately requested medical assistance. Emergency responders transported her to a hospital, where she is expected to survive.

Authorities said the driver involved attempted to leave the scene but was located a short distance away. Police detained the man, who reportedly showed signs of impairment. Officials said he is being processed for DUI, though his identity has not been released pending formal charges.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash. Police have not released additional details about how the collision occurred. That information remained unknown as the investigation continued.

Overview of the 43rd Avenue Crash

When a pedestrian crash involves suspected impairment and an attempted departure from the scene, investigators review traffic laws carefully to understand contributing factors without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on driver condition, pedestrian safety, and post-collision actions.

Because impairment is suspected, officers may examine the Driving Under the Influence Law. This law prohibits operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Impairment can reduce reaction time and judgment, increasing the risk of pedestrian collisions. Investigators will review observations and any testing conducted.

If the driver attempted to leave, authorities may also consider the Hit-and-Run Statute. This law requires drivers involved in injury crashes to stop, provide information, and render aid. Attempting to flee can delay medical care and complicate the investigation. Officers will evaluate the driver’s actions immediately after the crash.

When pedestrian positioning is a factor, police may review the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law. This law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and exercise caution to avoid collisions. Investigators will assess where the pedestrian was located and whether the driver had an opportunity to avoid the crash. These factors are often central to understanding a 43rd Avenue crash.

    What the Family Can Do

If you are supporting an injured loved one, staying in contact with Phoenix Police can help you receive updates as the investigation progresses. You can request official reports when they become available to better understand what happened.

You may also consider speaking with a qualified legal professional experienced in DUI-related pedestrian crashes. They can help explain your options and guide you through next steps. In addition, leaning on friends, family, or support resources can help during recovery.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
