(Corona, CA) A 25-year-old man was killed in a 91 Freeway collision early Sunday morning, April 19, after a wrong-way driver triggered a multi-vehicle crash.

The crash occurred around 5:35 a.m. on the westbound 91 Freeway near the Green River Road off-ramp. Investigators said a vehicle, possibly a black Ford F-150 pickup truck, traveled eastbound in the westbound lanes. The wrong-way movement led to a collision involving at least five other vehicles, including a big rig.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, where Abel Quintero, 25, of Lake Elsinore, was pronounced dead. Authorities have not clarified whether he was the wrong-way driver. The driver of the big rig was transported to Corona Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

All westbound lanes were closed shortly after the crash, and a SigAlert remained in effect for several hours. Officials have not released additional details about what led to the wrong-way driving. That information remained unknown as the investigation continued.

Analysis of the 91 Freeway Collision

When a crash involves a wrong-way driver on a freeway, investigators review traffic laws carefully to understand contributing factors without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on lane direction, driver awareness, and roadway safety.

Because the crash involved a vehicle traveling against traffic, officers may examine the Wrong-Way Driving Law. This law prohibits driving in the opposite direction on divided highways. Such actions create extreme danger, especially at freeway speeds. Investigators will assess how the vehicle entered the wrong lanes and how long it traveled before the collision.

If multiple vehicles were involved, authorities may also review the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to operate vehicles at speeds that are safe for roadway and traffic conditions. Even when not at fault, drivers may have limited time to react to a wrong-way vehicle. Investigators will evaluate whether speed affected the severity of the crash.

When drivers encounter unexpected hazards, police may consider the Duty of Care Law. This law requires drivers to exercise reasonable caution to avoid collisions. Sudden hazards like a wrong-way vehicle can reduce the ability to respond safely. These factors are often central to understanding a 91 Freeway collision.

    What the Family Can Do

You may also consider speaking with a qualified legal professional experienced in fatal freeway collisions. They can help explain your options and guide you through next steps. In addition, leaning on friends, family, or grief support services can provide comfort during this difficult time.
