(Moss Landing, CA) Two people were killed in a State Route 1 accident after a suspected DUI driver crossed into opposing traffic and caused a head-on collision Saturday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 10:18 p.m. on State Route 1 north of Springfield Road. Investigators said a GMC pickup driven southbound by 51-year-old David Olaeta crossed over double yellow lines, sideswiped a northbound Ford pickup, and then continued into the northbound lane before colliding head-on with a Honda sedan.
The Ford carried four people from Watsonville. A 58-year-old woman suffered possible injuries and was taken to a hospital, while the remaining occupants were not injured. The Honda carried three males, all of whom suffered major injuries. Authorities later confirmed that two passengers, identified as Paulino Hilario De Los Santos, 33, and Alberto Martinez Garcia, 17, both of Watsonville, died at the hospital. A third occupant remained hospitalized in critical condition.
CHP officers said Olaeta showed signs of alcohol intoxication following the crash. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI and later booked into Monterey County Jail on charges that include gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. The investigation remains ongoing.
Analysis of the State Route 1 Accident
When a fatal head-on collision involves allegations of impaired driving, investigators review traffic laws carefully to understand contributing factors without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on lane positioning, driver condition, and roadway safety.
Because investigators said the GMC crossed double yellow lines, officers will likely examine the Driving on the Right Side of the Road Law. This law requires drivers to remain on the correct side of the roadway except in limited circumstances. Crossing into opposing traffic on a two-lane highway can create a high risk of severe head-on collisions. Investigators will assess what caused the vehicle to leave its lane.
If impairment is suspected, authorities may also review the Driving Under the Influence Law. This law prohibits operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Impairment can reduce judgment, coordination, and reaction time. Investigators will evaluate observations, testing results, and evidence gathered at the scene.
When speed or roadway control is considered, police may examine the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds that are safe for roadway and traffic conditions. Rural highways can present visibility and reaction-time challenges at night. These factors are often central to understanding a State Route 1 accident.
