(Sacramento, California) According to California Highway Patrol, a woman was fixing her bicycle when she got hit by a vehicle along Franklin Boulevard in Sacramento County.

CHP South Sacramento stated that the woman was riding her bike on the right bicycle lane when her trailer  became detached. She then left her bike to fix the trailer’s axe onto the bike when she was run-over by a hit-and-run vehicle. The figure of the vehicle was a black pick-up truck.

According to CHP, the pick-up truck immediately left the scene. Her boyfriend witnessed the incident. The woman was sent to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The California Highway Patrol started investigating the fatal hit-and-run crash and are looking for the vehicle and driver that caused the incident.

    Perspective of Franklin Boulevard

The hit-and-run driver most likely violated California Code, VEH 2000(a). This code law requires drivers involved in a vehicle collision that injured or caused death to stay on scene. Under this law a person must fulfill the requirements of Section 20003 and 20004.

Besides what’s provided in (b) (1) of this code, if one violates (a) they can be punished with imprisonment in a state prison or county jail for at least a year. You can get fined a thousand dollars to ten thousand dollars or be fined and imprisoned. This is an important factor to help investigators find out what the driver would be punished with as he did leave the scene and did not follow what (a) requires drivers in his position to do.

If the driver was speeding while striking the woman, investigators can review California Code, VEH 22350. This specifies that no one should drive a vehicle upon a highway with an increase of speed than reasonable due to weather, visibility, traffic on, surface and width of highway, and shall not increase speed that endangers others and property.

Sometimes hit-and-run collisions can involve impairment due to alcoholic beverages or even drugs. If alcohol or drugs played a factor, investigators may review California Code, VEH 23152. (A) states that it is unlawful to drive under the influence of any alcoholic beverages. If the driver did so, they may have violated this law. Another violation that may have been the cause of the hit-and-run is if the driver had any addiction with drugs. In (a) it is unlawful to drive under the influence of any drugs.

    Advice for the Family

If you have lost a loved one in this incident, staying in contact with the California Highway Patrol can help you receive more information from the investigation. You can request official reports when they become available to better understand the circumstances.

You may also consider speaking with a qualified legal professional experienced in pedestrian accident cases. They can help explain your options and guide you through next steps.
