(Panorama City, CA) Three people were killed Friday night, December 12, in a Terra Bella Street collision after a speeding minivan ran a red light and triggered a three-vehicle crash.
The collision happened around 9:37 p.m. at Terra Bella Street and Woodman Avenue. Police say a gray Plymouth minivan traveling westbound on Terra Bella failed to stop for a red light. Shortly after, they struck a blue Ford Mustang and a tan Honda Civic, both heading south on Woodman.
Investigators believe the minivan driver had been fleeing the scene of a separate collision moments before the impact. After the crash, the Civic’s driver exited the vehicle and fled, failing to stop, identify themselves, or render aid. Paramedics pronounced the Mustang driver, who they later identified as Adrian Carrilo, a Mustang passenger, and the minivan driver dead at the scene.
Paramedics transported a 35-year-old man to a hospital in critical condition, while three others declined medical treatment. LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division is continuing the investigation.
Overview on the Terra Bella Street Collision
When a driver runs a red light, investigators rely on the Red-Light Signal Law. This statute requires motorists to stop at steady red signals before entering an intersection. Violating this rule creates high-risk conflict points, and in this case, it appears central to how the Terra Bella Street collision unfolded.
Because the minivan was reportedly speeding before impact, officers also examine the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds safe for roadway, traffic, and visibility conditions. Excessive speed greatly reduces reaction time and increases crash severity, especially at major intersections like Terra Bella and Woodman.
Investigators may further consider the Hit-and-Run Statute, given that one driver fled after the collision. This statute requires all involved motorists to remain at the scene, identify themselves, and provide aid. Failing to do so adds significant criminal liability and complicates reconstruction of the sequence of events.
