(Visalia, CA) A Road 100 accident resulted in the death of Jessica Velazquez, 23, after a BMW crashed into her jeep late Thursday night, November 20.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded just before 11:30 p.m. to the area of Road 100 and Avenue 264. Investigators said a white BMW traveled southbound. All of a sudden, it veered left into the northbound lane. It then collided with Velazquez’s blue Jeep Compass.
The impact caused the Jeep to spin onto the dirt shoulder, trapping Velazquez inside. The BMW came to rest in the southbound lane and later caught fire. The BMW driver managed to escape before the vehicle became engulfed in flames.
Emergency crews extricated the Velazquez, who was taken to Adventist Health Tulare, where she later died from her injuries. Her daughter, who was secured in a car seat, was unharmed. The BMW driver suffered major leg injuries. Paramedics transported the driver to Kaweah Health Medical Center for treatment.
Velazquez’s family set up a GoFundMe page to help raise funeral costs.
Overview on the Road 100 Accident
When a driver crosses into an opposing lane, investigators review several California traffic laws to determine fault. The Lane Usage Law prohibits driving to the left of a divided roadway or crossing a solid double-yellow line, except when specifically permitted. Violations often lead to severe head-on collisions like this one.
The Basic Speed Law also applies, requiring all drivers to operate at a speed safe for conditions such as darkness or narrow rural roads. Even slight excessive speed can reduce reaction time and make it difficult to stay within a lane.
Finally, investigators may consider the Reckless Driving Statute if evidence shows the BMW driver’s actions displayed a willful disregard for the safety of others. These statutes together will help CHP determine what caused the tragic Road 100 accident.
