(Newport Beach, CA) A bicyclist was critically injured Tuesday morning, October 28, in a Northbound Pacific Coast Highway crash that temporarily shut down lanes in Newport Beach, authorities said.

According to the Newport Beach Police Department, the collision occurred around 8:35 a.m. near Fernleaf Avenue. A vehicle traveling northbound on PCH struck the bicyclist.

When paramedics with the Newport Beach Fire Department arrived, they transported the rider to a local hospital in critical condition. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said.

All northbound lanes were closed between Goldenrod Avenue and Fernleaf Avenue as officers examined the scene. A SigAlert was issued around 8:50 a.m., and the closure lasted several hours before reopening to traffic.

Overview on the Northbound Pacific Coast Highway Crash

When a crash involves a cyclist and a motor vehicle, investigators review the Bicycle Safety Law. This statute grants bicyclists the same rights and responsibilities as other vehicle operators and requires motorists to share the road safely. Investigators will assess whether the driver maintained proper distance and awareness of the rider.

If unsafe speed contributed to the collision, the Basic Speed Law may apply. It requires all drivers to operate at speeds that are reasonable and safe for traffic, weather, and road conditions. On coastal routes like Pacific Coast Highway, curves, glare, or congestion can quickly make higher speeds unsafe.

Because serious injury occurred, the Reckless Driving Law could also be relevant. It prohibits driving in a willful or wanton disregard for the safety of others. Each of these laws will guide investigators as they determine the causes of the Northbound Pacific Coast Highway crash.

    Support for the Family

You should stay in contact with Newport Beach Police investigators for updates on your loved one’s condition. Keep medical records and witness information organized, as they can assist later in both insurance and legal matters.

Once you’re ready, you might consider consulting with an attorney experienced in bicycle-injury cases. They can help explain your rights and potential steps for recovery.

Most importantly, focus on your loved one’s healing and emotional well-being. Lean on family, friends, and local support organizations in Newport Beach as you navigate this challenging time.
