(Griffith Park, CA) A multi-vehicle wreck involving an overturned semi-truck caused a major shutdown in a northbound Sacramento (5) Freeway crash late Tuesday night, October 14, spilling fuel and blocking traffic for several hours, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred at around 11:30 p.m. just south of the westbound Ventura (134) Freeway connector. CHP Officer Elizabeth Kravig said a semi-trailer jackknifed, causing it to overturn. As a result, it collided with several vehicles, including a Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Camry, and Honda Civic.
Fuel from the overturned big rig spilled across the freeway, prompting a hazardous materials cleanup. When paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived, they treated multiple people at the scene. They transported at least one person to a hospital in an unknown condition. All northbound lanes were closed until after 5 a.m. as Caltrans crews worked to remove debris and clean up the spill.
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, and the CHP is continuing its investigation.
Overview on the Sacramento (5) Freeway Crash
Pileups and freeway closures like this one can result from a mix of speed, spacing, and sudden braking. This accident underscores the dangers of driving closely to or alongside big rigs on busy connector roads where traffic often shifts unexpectedly.
If the semi-truck traveled too fast for conditions, the Basic Speed Law could apply. It requires all motorists to maintain a speed that is safe and prudent for the roadway, traffic, and visibility at the time. Even moderate speeds can become unsafe when hauling heavy cargo or navigating curved ramps.
Another relevant statute is Following Too Closely Law. This rule prohibits following another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent. Chain-reaction crashes often occur when drivers fail to maintain proper distance. This is an especially critical issue when behind large trucks that require longer stopping distances.
CHP officers will review evidence such as skid marks, witness statements, and vehicle positioning to piece together the sequence of impacts that led to the Sacramento (5) Freeway crash.
Guidance for Those Affected
If you were caught in this traffic collision, you can request an official CHP accident report to understand the findings once the investigation is complete.
