(Los Angeles, CA) A woman was killed and ten others were hospitalized early Sunday in a Southbound 5 Freeway accident in Boyle Heights after a big rig plowed into multiple vehicles.

The crash happened around 5:10 a.m. just south of Fourth Street. At least one vehicle caught fire, prompting a physical rescue request from the Los Angeles Fire Department. First responders evaluated a total of 15 people at the scene, and nine vehicles sustained major front-end damage. Paramedics transported several patients with moderate injuries to Adventist Health White Memorial. The fatal victim was identified as 60-year-old Miriam Marroquin. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Overview on the Southbound 5 Freeway Accident

When a commercial truck strikes multiple vehicles, investigators often review the Basic Speed Law. This statute requires all drivers, including big rig operators, to travel at speeds that are reasonable for traffic and roadway conditions. Early morning darkness and freeway congestion make speed analysis central to understanding how the Southbound 5 Freeway accident unfolded.

Because the crash involved multiple impacts and significant front-end damage, analysts may apply the Following Too Closely Law. Heavy trucks require considerably more stopping distance than passenger vehicles. Evaluating spacing and reaction time helps determine whether inadequate following distance contributed to the severity of the multi-vehicle collision.

Investigators may also reference the Lane Usage and Safe Movement Law. Multi-vehicle freeway collisions often begin with an unsafe lane deviation or loss of control. Reviewing lane position, vehicle paths, and potential drift helps clarify how the big rig entered and interacted with the nine affected vehicles during the Southbound 5 Freeway accident.

    Support for the Family

If your loved one was affected by this tragedy, consider requesting the CHP collision report once it becomes available. It will provide crucial details about the investigation and help guide next steps.

You may also wish to consult a wrongful death or personal injury attorney who can explain options related to funeral expenses, medical bills, and potential claims.

Lean on family, friends, and local grief support services during this difficult time. Compassionate assistance can make navigating the aftermath of a major freeway crash a little less overwhelming.
