Cabazon, CA (March 16, 2024) 32-year-old Joseph Rios lost his life on Wednesday night, March 13th, when the vehicle he was in collided with a big rig and a tree. Rios was the passenger in a Hyundai Sonata when the accident occurred around 6:36 p.m. on Interstate 10. The news of the Menifee resident’s death spread quickly through the town of Cabazon.
The driver of the white Hyundai Sonata was heading west on Interstate 10 when he lost control of the Hyundai and swerved onto the shoulder of the interstate. In an attempt to get back onto the roadway, the driver over-corrected and entered the freeway too fast. In doing so, the Hyundai slammed into a big rig that was traveling along Interstate 10. The force of the collision caused the Hyundai to go off the road again where it crashed into a tree.
The truck driver didn’t stop after being hit by the Hyundai, but instead continued driving. Officers are not sure if the driver even realized he had been hit by the Hyundai, according to reports.

Emergency crews hurried to the scene and found the Hyundai with major damage on the side of the road. Paramedics found the two people inside the car and discovered that the passenger, Rios, had sustained life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs where he held on for over an hour before succumbing to his injuries. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The driver of the Hyundai had minor injuries following the accident and was taken to a hospital to be treated.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating this fatal collision on Interstate 10 in Cabazon. They are determined to discover what caused this deadly accident. They also want to find the driver of the big rig that fled the scene. Anyone with information should contact the police.
