(Los Angeles, CA) A Santa Ana Freeway crash involving a sedan and a big rig resulted in the death of Cesar Biteranta, 71, in Boyle Heights Monday afternoon, November 17.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 12:50 p.m. on the northbound 5 Freeway just south of Indiana Street. The crash happened on the right side of the northbound lanes, where a car and a big rig reportedly collided under still-undetermined circumstances.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said paramedics pronounced Biteranta dead at the scene. Authorities did not report any additional injuries. Fire crews assisted in recovering the Biteranta’s body while investigators worked to clear the wreckage.

Traffic on the northbound Santa Ana Freeway was heavily affected during the afternoon as lanes were blocked for several hours. Drivers were urged to use alternate routes while the investigation continued.

Overview on the Santa Ana Freeway Crash

When a passenger vehicle and a commercial truck collide, investigators typically review the Following-Too-Closely Law. This law requires drivers to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, allowing time to stop or maneuver safely. At freeway speeds, insufficient distance can quickly lead to devastating outcomes.

The Unsafe Lane Change Law may also apply if one of the vehicles merged without ensuring it was safe to do so. Truck collisions often occur when visibility or lane clearance is limited.

Finally, the Basic Speed Law reminds all motorists, especially those driving large vehicles, that they must operate at speeds safe for current traffic and road conditions. Investigators will use these laws to determine what led to the fatal Santa Ana Freeway crash.

    Support for Biteranta’s Family

If you are related to Cesar Biteranta, you should stay in touch with the California Highway Patrol’s East Los Angeles Office for updates and to obtain the official collision report when it becomes available. This document will help you understand what occurred and who may be responsible.

Consider consulting with a wrongful-death attorney who specializes in freeway or trucking collisions. They can provide guidance on your legal rights, including how to handle insurance and potential claims.

Above all, take the time to grieve and seek support. Friends, relatives, and community grief resources in Los Angeles can offer comfort and help your family cope as you process this sudden and heartbreaking loss.
