(Long Beach, CA) A 1-year-old girl was killed Monday morning, March 2, after an SUV reversed onto a porch and struck three people in a Main Avenue collision.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Maine Avenue. Investigators said a Lamont Russell, 55, backed up an SUV, possibly attempting to turn around. All of a sudden, the vehicle jumped the curb and struck a woman and two young girls seated on a porch.

Officers transported the most seriously injured victim, 1-year-old Myrah Hunter, to a hospital. Despite emergency efforts, she died from her injuries. Long Beach Fire Department paramedics transported the woman and the second child to a hospital. Officials said both had stable vital signs.

Police reported that Russel remained at the scene where officers questioned him. According to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department inmate records, Russell was booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and assault. His bail is set at $335,000.

Authorities did not immediately clarify the basis for the assault allegation. Detectives continued reviewing evidence and witness statements as the investigation remained ongoing.

Analysis on the Main Avenue Collision

When a vehicle leaves the roadway and strikes pedestrians on private property, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on negligent vehicle operation, impairment, and safe backing procedures.

Because the driver was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, authorities may examine the Vehicular Manslaughter Law. This statute addresses deaths that occur when a driver commits an unlawful act or lawful act in an unlawful manner with gross negligence. Investigators will assess whether the driver’s actions met that legal threshold.

Since the crash reportedly occurred while the vehicle was reversing, officials may also consider the Unsafe Backing Law. This law requires drivers to ensure that a vehicle can be moved in reverse with reasonable safety. Officers may evaluate pedal use, speed, and spatial awareness.

Investigators could further review the Driving Under the Influence Law if impairment becomes relevant. This law prohibits operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. These combined statutes help guide the department’s evaluation of the Main Avenue collision as evidence continues to be analyzed.

    Support for the Family

If you are related to Myrah Hunter or are supporting her loved ones, stay in contact with investigators. They can provide the official police when they become available.

You may also consider speaking with a qualified legal professional. They can help you better understand your options. Emotional support from family members, friends, clergy, or grief counseling services can be especially important during such a sudden and heartbreaking loss.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
