(Las Vegas, Nevada) At approximately 9:01 a.m., troopers received reports on a vehicle crash that occurred near the south end of the Las Vegas Strip involving a Zoox autonomous vehicle and a silver Nissan Murano.
According to investigators, police said that there was no one inside the Zoox. However, the silver Nissan Murano driver suffered minor injuries on their upper body and was transported to the hospital. Tow trucks arrived at the scene and cleared the vehicles from the scene.
The No. to No.5 travel lanes were temporarily shut down due to operations and investigation taking place on the southbound side of Las Vegas Boulevard.
Legal Analysis on the Las Vegas Boulevard Accident
When it comes to the Zoox accident, it’s likely that investigators may want to review certain code laws in who would be liable if the autonomous vehicle was the one that struck the SUV. Investigators may review NRS 482A.090 as it states that the original manufacturer or if a developer of a motor vehicle that was converted by an authorized third party to an autonomous, they would not be at fault for any injuries the motor vehicle causes due to it’s defect that resulted by the modification created by the third party. But if the defect that caused the injury was already in the vehicle then the manufacturer or developer would be at fault.
Investigators may also review NRS 482A.095 to which it requires anyone responsible for the testing of the autonomous vehicle to report to the Department of Motor Vehicles if the autonomous vehicle was involved in a crash within 10 business days after the vehicle crash. Violating this law can result in an administrative fine of at least $2,500 by the Department.
