(Chatsworth, California) One person was tragically killed and two others were injured on the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway rollover crash early this morning.

According to LAFD, the collision was reported at 1:27 a.m. on the westbound (118) freeway in Topanga Canyon Boulevard. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found two vehicles in the accident and one vehicle that had rolled over.  The LAFD also confirmed that one person had died at the scene and three people who were affected were required to receive medical evaluation.

California Highway Patrol temporarily shut down lanes on the west of Topanga Canyon Boulevard and four other lanes were also temporarily shut down. However, the carpool lanes remained open. Westbound traffic to Porter Ranch drive was backed up, and drivers were suggested to use alternative routes.

Perspective Analysis on the Westbound (118) Freeway Accident in Topanga Canyon Boulevard

Because we don’t know the cause of the collision, we can only assume based on injuries and those affected in this collision. Normally when a person is deceased due to a vehicle crash, it is often another driver’s fault. If that was the case in this collision, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and reckless driving could be the cause of the fatal freeway collision.

In this case, investigators may review California Vehicle Code 23152 (a), which prohibits driving under the influence of any drugs If the that  played a factor in this collision, then  they may face serious fines like $390 to $1,000, if this was their first conviction with at least 98 hours or 48 hours continues with the maximum of 6 months of imprisonment in a county jail (California Vehicle Code 23563).

If one of the drivers that caused the collision was charged a second DUI within 10 years, then they may face punishments with a fine of $390 to 1,000 and imprisonment in a county jail for at least 90 days, California Vehicle Code 23540
