(Huntington Beach, CA) A 53-year-old woman died in a Pacific Coast Highway accident late Wednesday night, April 15, after her SUV was struck from behind and pushed into a wetlands area.

The crash occurred around 10:40 p.m. on Pacific Coast Highway south of Warner Avenue. Investigators said a white BMW traveling northbound collided with a silver Kia Soul ahead of it. The impact forced the Kia off the roadway and into a nearby marsh.

Huntington Beach police officers and lifeguards responded and removed the driver of the Kia from the water. Paramedics transported the woman, identified as a 53-year-old from Long Beach, to a hospital, where she later died. Authorities did not release her name pending notification of family.

Police identified the BMW driver as a 23-year-old man from Long Beach. He was taken into custody on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI involving alcohol and drugs causing injury. Officials said the investigation remains ongoing as detectives review the circumstances of the crash.

Overview of the Pacific Coast Highway Accident

When a fatal crash involves a rear-end collision and suspected impairment, investigators review traffic laws carefully to understand contributing factors without assigning final conclusions too early. These reviews often focus on driver condition, following distance, and roadway awareness.

Because impairment is suspected, officers may examine the Driving Under the Influence Law. This law prohibits operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Impairment can significantly reduce reaction time and judgment, increasing the likelihood of rear-end collisions. Investigators will review evidence such as statements and test results.

If the crash involved a rear-end impact, authorities may also consider the Following Too Closely Law. This law requires drivers to maintain a safe distance between vehicles. Failing to leave enough space can prevent a driver from stopping in time. Investigators will assess vehicle spacing and speed leading up to the collision.

When speed is a factor, police may review the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds that are safe for roadway and traffic conditions. Excessive or unsafe speed can increase both the likelihood and severity of a crash. These factors are often central to understanding a Pacific Coast Highway accident.

    What the Family Can Do

You may also consider speaking with a qualified legal professional experienced in DUI-related collisions. They can help explain your options and guide you through next steps.
