(Sonoma County, CA) One person was killed, another hospitalized, and a third arrested following a Lakeville Highway collision involving three vehicles early Sunday morning, October 26, authorities said.
According to the Santa Rosa office of the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred just before 6:00 a.m. on Lakeville Highway, south of Old Lakeville Road #3. upon investigating, authorities learned that a Ford Mustang traveled southbound. While attempting to pass over double-yellow lines to pass a Toyota Highlander, the Mustang collided head-on with a northbound Honda HR-V. The impact caused the Toyota to spin off the roadway after being struck on its left side, the CHP said.
Officials reported that a passenger in the Honda died at the scene, while paramedics transported the driver to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with major injuries. The Ford’s driver, who was the only person in that vehicle, also suffered major injuries. Officers arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
Authorities determined the six occupants of the Toyota did not suffer any injuries. Authorities closed Lakeville Highway for about four and a half hours as crews cleared the scene. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Santa Rosa CHP office at 707-8206-5600.
Overview on the Lakeville Highway Collision
When a driver crosses into opposing lanes and causes a fatal crash, investigators look closely at the Unsafe Passing Law. It prohibits drivers from passing another vehicle on a two-lane highway when doing so requires crossing double yellow lines. Such a maneuver is illegal and often leads to head-on collisions like this one.
Because the suspect driver was arrested for intoxication, the DUI Causing Injury or Death Law will also apply. This law makes it a felony to operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and cause bodily harm or death to another person. It is among the most serious offenses in California traffic law.
Additionally, investigators will consider the Basic Speed Law, which requires drivers to travel at speeds that are safe for current road and traffic conditions. Excessive speed during an illegal pass increases the severity of impact and the likelihood of catastrophic injury. Together, these statutes will help determine full accountability for the Lakeville Highway collision.
