(Sky Valley, CA) A 45-year-old man was killed in a 22nd Avenue collision involving an all-terrain utility vehicle and a passenger car Wednesday afternoon, April 15.

The crash was reported shortly before 4:40 p.m. at 22nd Avenue and Marshall Road near Desert Hot Springs. Investigators said a blue Toyota Camry traveling westbound struck a green John Deere Gator that was also moving westbound along the right shoulder of the roadway. The impact occurred under circumstances that remain under review.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and pronounced the driver of the utility vehicle dead. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity. The driver of the Camry, a 35-year-old man, remained at the scene, according to officials.

The California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate what led to the collision. Officials did not release additional details about contributing factors. That information remained unknown as the investigation continued.

Analysis of the 22nd Avenue Collision

When a crash involves a vehicle traveling along the shoulder, investigators review traffic laws carefully to understand contributing factors without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on roadway positioning, driver awareness, and safe passing behavior.

Because the utility vehicle was reportedly traveling on the shoulder, officers may examine the Driving on Shoulder Law. This law limits when vehicles may use the shoulder, generally allowing it only under specific conditions. Investigators will assess whether the vehicle was lawfully positioned and visible to traffic. Shoulder use can create unexpected conflicts with passing vehicles.

If awareness or attention is a factor, authorities may also review the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to operate vehicles at speeds that are safe for roadway and traffic conditions. Even at moderate speeds, failing to notice a slower vehicle on the shoulder can increase the risk of a collision. Investigators will evaluate visibility and reaction time.

When vehicles travel in the same direction, police may also consider the Following Distance Law. This law requires drivers to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead. Proper spacing allows time to react to slower or partially obstructed vehicles. These factors are often central to understanding a 22nd Avenue collision.
