San Diego, CA (April 11, 2024) Sadness swept through the Ridgeview/Webster area of San Diego when a DUI driver claimed the life of a motorcyclist. A 35-year-old San Diego resident, Derek Grover II, was struck and killed by a DUI driver while riding his motorcycle on Saturday evening. The tragic accident took place just minutes before 7:30 p.m. on Euclid Avenue, at the Lyon Street intersection.
Derek Grover II was riding south on a 2021 Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Euclid Avenue. Just north of State Route 94, at approximately 7:30 p.m., he approached the intersection of Lyon Street. As he neared it, a 2000 GMC Sierra was heading north on Euclid and suddenly made a left turn directly in front of the motorcycle. As he turned, Grover had no time to react and slammed into the GMC. The impact from the collision threw Grover from his motorcycle and sent him rolling onto the road.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found Grover lying in the middle of the roadway, his motorcycle several feet away, destroyed. Paramedics rushed to his side and found that he had sustained life-threatening injuries. Without wasting any time, they loaded Grover into an ambulance and took him to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest. The medical staff there did everything they could, but Grover’s injuries were too extensive, and he succumbed to them. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The driver of the GMC remained at the scene, but when officers questioned him, they determined that he had been driving under the influence. The 58-year-old driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of DUI. He now faces other charges following this deadly accident in San Diego.
