Oceanside, CA (March 18, 2024) Drivers near State Route 76 in Oceanside were shocked to find an injured bicyclist lying in the road on Sunday night. The bicyclist had been struck by a vehicle that had fled the scene, according to officers. Several drivers saw the injured person near the intersection of College Boulevard and State Route 76, and stopped to call 911.
It was just after 11:30 p.m. as the bicyclist rode along State Route 76 in Oceanside. Vehicles drove past him as he rode, until one vehicle, identified as a silver Kia struck the bicyclist and then, quickly fled the scene. The bicyclist was left alone, in the dark, on the roadway with serious injuries.
Several vehicles driving along the highway noticed the bicyclist and stopped. Officers with the Oceanside Police Department said they received several calls about the injured bicyclist from these drivers. Sgt. Cling Bussey with the Oceanside Police Department told City News Service that they found pieces of the vehicle at the scene.
Paramedics found the bicyclist, with serious damage about 2 miles down the road, officers said. The bicyclist sustained critical injuries in this accident and was rushed to a local hospital to receive treatment.
The Oceanside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is leading the investigation into this hit-and-run crash. They are determined to locate the car and its driver and bring them to justice. They are asking anyone with information to contact Officer Jose Gomez with the Oceanside Police Department.
