(Denver, Colorado) Greenwood Village Police Officers were at the scene of a two vehicle crash when a suspected driver hit a Greenwood police officer by rear-ending the patrol vehicle. The vehicle also included two other passengers.

The Colorado State Patrol confirmed that the Greenwood Village Police Officers were responding to a two vehicle crash that occurred on I-25 northbound near Orchard Road at around 11 p.m on Friday.

The officer and the two passengers both had minor injuries and the suspect is facing serious charges of a DUI, careless driving, driving with a suspended license as well as not stopping for an emergency vehicle.

Perspective on Suspected Drunk Driver’s Charges

When investigators were identifying what the suspected drunk driver should be charged for, they most likely reviewed 42-4-1307(6). This law discusses that if an individual committed a first offense of a DUI, DUI per se, or did not properly comply with officers in drawing blood if they had 0.20 BAC in their system while driving or two hours afterwards, then they can be sentenced to jail for 10 days or up to a year.

    If Speed Played a Factor

If the driver was speeding, investigators may take a look at the Colorado General Assembly.  This  discusses one of the following: that driving 1 to 24 mph above the required speed is Class A Traffic infraction. Driving 25 mph or more is considered a Class 2 misdemeanor traffic offense.

Most of the time, a Class A or B traffic infraction can result in a fine of 15 to 100 dollars. Driving over the reasonable speed can also result in a Class A traffic infraction. You can also get charged higher based on the certainty of the infraction.

If the driver drove 25 mph or more in a construction zone then that is considered a Class 1 misdemeanor traffic offense. Getting a Class 1 can result in being sentenced to jail for 10 days. You can also get fined 300 dollars or both. The maximum is a year in jail, a fine of 1,000 dollars or both.

If the driver committed a Class 2 misdemeanor traffic offenses they can get fined 150 dollars, 10 days in jail or both.

    Advice for the Family

If you have lost a loved one in this incident, staying in contact with the Colorado State Patrol can help you receive more information from the investigation. You can request official reports when they become available to better understand the circumstances.

You may also consider speaking with a qualified legal professional experienced in car accident cases. They can help explain your options and guide you through next steps. In addition, seeking support from family, friends, or grief counseling services can provide comfort during this difficult time.
