(Los Angeles, CA) A woman in her 50s was injured in a Shatto Street collision after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while crossing in a marked crosswalk.

The crash occurred around 7:50 p.m. on March 18 in the Westlake District, near Shatto Street and Witmer Street. Investigators said the woman was crossing within a marked crosswalk when a vehicle traveling northbound on Witmer Street struck her. The driver continued without stopping.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and treated the woman for injuries. Authorities did not clarify whether she was transported to a hospital. Her current condition has not been publicly updated.

Police have not released a description of the suspect or the vehicle involved. The Los Angeles Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying the driver. Officials said the circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation.

Analysis of the Shatto Street Collision

When a pedestrian is struck in a crosswalk and the driver leaves the scene, investigators review traffic laws carefully to understand contributing factors without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on right-of-way, driver responsibility, and post-collision actions.

Because the pedestrian was reportedly in a marked crosswalk, officers may examine the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law. This law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians crossing within marked or unmarked crosswalks. Investigators will assess whether the driver had sufficient time and visibility to stop. Crosswalk positioning is a key factor in these cases.

If the driver fled, authorities will likely review the Hit-and-Run Law. This law requires drivers involved in injury crashes to stop, provide identification, and render aid. Leaving the scene can delay care and hinder the investigation. Officers will work to identify the vehicle through tips and available evidence.

When driver attentiveness is considered, police may also review the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds that are safe for roadway and traffic conditions. Even in city areas, failing to adjust speed can increase the risk of pedestrian collisions. These factors are often central to understanding a Shatto Street collision.

How the Family Can Move Forward

If you are supporting an injured loved one, staying in contact with LAPD investigators can help you receive updates. You can request official reports when they become available to better understand the case.

You may also consider speaking with a qualified legal professional experienced in pedestrian and hit-and-run cases. They can help explain your options and guide you through next steps. In addition, leaning on family, friends, or support resources can help during recovery.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
