(Oceanside, CA) A man in his early 20s was found dead in a suspected State Route 76 collision Sunday morning, April 26, along a roadway.

Officers responded around 11 a.m. to the westbound lanes of State Route 76 near Old River Road after a caller reported a person lying on the side of the road. When they arrived, they found the man unresponsive and began CPR. North County Fire Protection District personnel arrived shortly after and pronounced him dead at 11:05 a.m.

Investigators said the victim appeared to have injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. Authorities have not released his identity, pending notification of next of kin. Officials also said there is no suspect information available, and it remains unclear when or how the collision occurred.

The incident prompted a full closure of westbound State Route 76 from Old River Road to Singh Way for several hours. Crews processed the scene before reopening the roadway around 3 p.m. The investigation remains ongoing.

Analysis of the State Route 76 Collision

When a fatal incident involves a possible pedestrian strike with limited initial details, investigators review traffic laws carefully to understand contributing factors without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on driver responsibility, pedestrian positioning, and roadway conditions.

Because the crash may have involved a pedestrian on a roadway not typically designed for foot traffic, officers may examine the Pedestrian Outside Crosswalk Law. This law requires pedestrians to yield to vehicles when crossing outside marked crosswalks. Investigators will assess where the individual was located and whether this factor played a role. Visibility and roadway design are also important considerations.

If a driver left the scene or failed to report the crash, authorities may also review the Hit-and-Run Law. This law requires drivers involved in injury or fatal collisions to stop, provide information, and render aid. Investigators will determine whether a driver was aware of the collision and what actions followed.

When visibility or speed is considered, police may examine the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds that are safe for roadway and traffic conditions. Higher speeds can reduce reaction time, especially on highways. These factors are often central to understanding a State Route 76 collision.
