(Phoenix, AZ) A woman was seriously injured in a 20th Avenue crash late Tuesday night, April 21, after being struck by a hit-and-run drive.

Officers responded around 10:20 p.m. to the area near 20th Avenue and Indian School Road following reports of a pedestrian collision. When they arrived, they found the woman with critical injuries and called for emergency medical assistance. She was transported to a hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Authorities said the driver involved fled the scene before officers arrived. Police have not released any description of the suspect vehicle. Officials also did not provide additional details about how the crash occurred. That information remained unknown as the investigation continued.

Detectives have taken over the case and are working to identify the driver. The roadway was temporarily impacted during the response but has since reopened. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Analysis of the 20th Avenue Crash

When a pedestrian crash involves a driver leaving the scene, investigators review traffic laws carefully to understand contributing factors without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on driver responsibility, pedestrian safety, and actions after the collision.

Because the driver fled, officers will likely examine the Duty to Remain at the Scene Law. This law requires drivers involved in injury crashes to stop, provide information, and render aid. Leaving the scene can delay emergency care and make investigations more difficult. Authorities will work to identify the driver through witness statements or available evidence.

If pedestrian positioning is a factor, police may also review the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law. This law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and exercise caution to avoid collisions. Investigators will assess where the pedestrian was located and whether the driver had an opportunity to avoid the crash.

When visibility or speed is considered, officers may examine the Speed Greater Than Reasonable Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds that are safe for roadway and traffic conditions. Nighttime conditions can reduce visibility and increase risk. These factors are often central to understanding a 20th Avenue crash.

    What the Family Can Do

If you are supporting an injured loved one, staying in contact with Phoenix Police can help you receive updates as the investigation progresses. You can request official reports when they become available to better understand what happened.

You may also consider speaking with a qualified legal professional experienced in pedestrian and hit-and-run cases. They can help explain your options and guide you through next steps. In addition, leaning on friends, family, or support resources can help during recovery.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
