(Hollywood, CA) A man in his 40s was killed in a 101 Freeway ramp crash after being struck by a vehicle early Thursday morning, April 9.

Officers responded around 12:42 a.m. to the northbound Hollywood (101) Freeway near the Gower Street on-ramp. When they arrived, they found the pedestrian lying in the number four lane of traffic. Emergency responders assessed the situation, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not released the victim’s name, pending positive identification and notification of his family. Officials also did not provide details about how the man came to be on the freeway. That information remained unknown as the investigation continued.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. It is unclear how many vehicles were involved or whether any drivers remained at the scene. No additional details about contributing factors have been released.

Analysis of the 101 Freeway Ramp Crash

When a fatal pedestrian collision occurs on a freeway, investigators review traffic laws carefully to understand contributing factors without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on pedestrian access, driver awareness, and roadway conditions.

Because freeways are not designed for pedestrian travel, officers may examine the Pedestrian on Freeway Law. This law generally prohibits pedestrians from being on freeway lanes except in emergencies. Investigators will work to determine why the man was on the roadway and whether any circumstances required his presence there. This factor can be critical in understanding how the collision occurred.

If visibility or reaction time played a role, authorities may also review the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds that are safe for current conditions, including lighting and roadway hazards. At freeway speeds, drivers have limited time to react to unexpected obstacles. Reduced visibility at night can further increase risk.

When drivers approach on-ramps or merging areas, police may consider the Unsafe Lane Change Law. This law requires that any movement on the roadway be made safely and with reasonable care. Sudden lane changes near ramps can increase the likelihood of collisions, especially if a pedestrian is present. These factors are often central to understanding a 101 Freeway ramp crash.
