(North Hills, CA) A 39-year-old man suffered critical injuries Monday evening, March 2, after a minivan struck him in a Nordhoff Street collision at a busy intersection.

Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and Nordhoff Street after receiving reports of the crash around 7:55 p.m. Witnesses said a dark gray minivan traveling eastbound on Nordhoff struck the pedestrian as he crossed within a marked crosswalk. The driver of the minivan did not stop following the impact. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics transported the critically injured man to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Investigators initially believed the vehicle involved was a Toyota Camry sedan, but later determined it was an older minivan based on additional evidence. Authorities did not release information about the driver’s identity, vehicle license plate, or whether impairment played a role. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to locate the driver and gather witness statements.

Overview of the Nordhoff Street Collision

When a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle in a marked crosswalk, investigators examine traffic safety statutes to identify contributing factors, without determining liability at this stage. These examinations typically address driver attentiveness, pedestrian protections, and the obligation to stop after striking someone.

Because the driver left the scene, authorities will focus significant attention on the Hit-and-Run Law (VEH 20001). This statute mandates that any driver involved in a collision causing injury must stop immediately, identify themselves, and offer reasonable aid to injured parties. Fleeing a crash scene obstructs emergency response and invokes substantial criminal consequences upon apprehension.

Authorities may also examine the Basic Speed Statute. This law requires motorists to maintain speeds that are safe relative to existing traffic flow, visibility, and pavement conditions. Evening collisions at major intersections often reflect situations where vehicles were traveling too quickly for the surrounding environment.

If the pedestrian’s right-of-way becomes relevant, officials could review the Protecting Pedestrians in Crosswalks Law. This provision requires drivers to yield to pedestrians lawfully using crosswalks and to exercise reasonable care. Investigators will evaluate how these statutes apply to the Nordhoff Street collision as the probe advances.

    Support for the Family

If you are related to the injured pedestrian or providing assistance during his recovery, maintaining communication with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division can help you receive progress updates and obtain official reports.

You may wish to consult with a legal professional who specializes in hit-and-run injury cases to learn about your rights and available remedies. Recovery from serious injury requires not only medical care but also emotional encouragement. Family, friends, and professional counseling services can provide meaningful support during a difficult recovery period. For case details, contact Investigator Takishita at the LAPD Valley Traffic Division: 818-644-8116. Anonymous information may also be reported to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477) or through www.lacrimestoppers.org.
