(San Diego, CA) A man was killed early Sunday morning, March 1, after being struck by two vehicles in a West Mission Bay Drive crash.

According to the San Diego Police Department, the initial collision occurred at approximately 2:20 a.m. in the area of West Mission Bay Drive and Sea World Drive. Investigators said the pedestrian was in the southbound lanes of the 2000 block of West Mission Bay Drive when he was struck by a silver vehicle.

Police reported that the silver vehicle continued southbound without stopping. Shortly after the initial impact, a 28-year-old man driving southbound ran over the downed pedestrian. Authorities said that second driver remained at the scene and cooperated fully with officers.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials did not release his name, age, or city of residence. That information remained pending notification of next of kin.

Police stated that the second driver was not suspected of driving under the influence. Detectives continued working to identify the suspect vehicle involved in the initial impact. The investigation into the West Mission Bay Drive crash remained ongoing as officers gathered evidence and reviewed potential surveillance footage.

Analysis on the West Mission Bay Drive Crash

When a fatal hit-and-run involves multiple vehicles, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on pedestrian positioning, driver attentiveness, and the legal duty to remain at the scene.

Because the first driver allegedly fled, authorities will closely examine the Hit-and-Run Law. This law requires drivers involved in collisions resulting in injury or death to stop immediately, provide identifying information, and render reasonable assistance. Leaving the scene can delay emergency response and complicate accountability.

Since the pedestrian was in active travel lanes, investigators may also consider the Pedestrian Crossing Law. This statute requires pedestrians outside marked crosswalks to yield to vehicles that pose an immediate hazard. Officers may evaluate lighting, visibility, and traffic flow at the time of the collision.

Officials could further review the Basic Speed Law if speed becomes relevant. This law requires motorists to operate at speeds reasonable for traffic and roadway conditions. These combined statutes help guide SDPD’s evaluation of the West Mission Bay Drive crash as the case proceeds.

    Support for the Family

If you are related to the man who died or are supporting his loved ones, staying in contact with investigators can help you receive updates and request official police and coroner reports when they become available.

You may also consider speaking with a qualified legal professional to better understand your options after a fatal hit-and-run collision. Emotional support from family members, friends, or grief counseling services can be especially important during a sudden and painful loss.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
