(San Marcos, CA) A man was killed Saturday night, February 21, after being struck by a vehicle in a North Pacific Street collision, the driver fleeing the scene on foot.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, deputies dispatched from the station at approximately 8:35 p.m. to the 100 block of North Pacific Street. When they arrived, they located a male pedestrian who had been struck in the roadway. Deputies pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Sgt. Jeremy Collis said preliminary findings indicate the suspect fled on foot toward Mission Avenue following the collision. The driver left behind a white 2022 Hyundai Venue SUV at the scene. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect heading north toward Mission Avenue after the crash.

Authorities did not release the victim’s name, age, or city of residence. Officials also did not clarify where the pedestrian was positioned at the time of the impact or whether he was within a marked crosswalk. Those details remained under investigation as detectives continued gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses.

No arrests were announced. The investigation into the North Pacific Street collision remained active as deputies worked to identify and locate the suspect. Anyone with information regarding the fatal hit-and-run was urged to contact the sheriff’s San Marcos station at 760-510-5200.

Analysis on the North Pacific Street Collision

When a fatal hit-and-run involves a fleeing driver, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on pedestrian positioning, driver attentiveness, and the legal obligation to remain at the scene.

Because the suspect allegedly fled after the crash, authorities will closely examine the Duty to Stop and Render Aid Law. This law requires drivers involved in collisions resulting in injury or death to stop immediately, provide identifying information, and render reasonable assistance. Leaving the scene can delay emergency care and complicate accountability.

If pedestrian location becomes relevant, investigators may also consider the Pedestrian Crossing Law. This law requires pedestrians outside marked crosswalks to yield to vehicles that pose an immediate hazard. Officers may review visibility and roadway lighting to understand the circumstances.

Officials may further evaluate the Basic Speed Law if speed is determined to be a factor. This law requires motorists to travel at speeds reasonable for traffic and roadway conditions. These combined statutes help guide the sheriff’s department’s evaluation of the North Pacific Street collision as evidence continues to be analyzed.

    Support for the Family

If you are related to the man who died or are supporting his loved ones, staying in contact with investigators can help you receive updates and request official sheriff’s and coroner reports when they become available.

You may also consider speaking with a qualified legal professional to better understand your options after a fatal hit-and-run. Emotional support from family members, friends, or grief counseling services can be important during a sudden and painful loss.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
