(Los Angeles, CA) A 28-year-old man was killed and several others were injured early Sunday morning, January 18, in a northbound 5 Freeway accident involving multiple vehicles in the Los Feliz area.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash occurred around 3:20 a.m. on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway at Los Feliz Boulevard. Emergency crews dispatched after reports of a major collision blocking lanes of traffic. When firefighters and officers arrived, they found multiple damaged vehicles spread across the freeway.

Los Angeles Fire Department officials said the impact caused the 28-year-old victim to be ejected from a vehicle. Officers pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later identified him as Moses Jimenez. Fire officials said the force of the collision caused significant injuries to several other people involved.

According to LAFD spokesperson Lyndsey Lantz, a second 28-year-old man suffered serious injuries. Paramedics took him and a 61-year-old man, a 35-year-old man, and two 22-year-old men to hospitals.

The collision prompted CHP to issue a SigAlert at 3:39 a.m., closing all northbound lanes of the freeway. Authorities diverted traffic for several hours while investigators documented the scene and crews cleared debris. CHP said they lifted the SigAlert at approximately 9:54 a.m., allowing traffic to resume.

Investigators did not immediately release details about what led up to the crash.

Opinion on the Northbound 5 Freeway Accident

When a fatal multi-vehicle collision occurs on a major freeway during overnight hours, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews focus on speed, following distance, and lane movement when visibility and reaction time may be reduced.

If speed is suspected, investigators may examine the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to operate at speeds that are reasonable for traffic, visibility, and roadway conditions. Late-night freeway driving can involve darker conditions and fewer visual cues, which can increase the risk of severe crashes when speeds are too high.

Because multiple vehicles were involved and lanes were blocked, authorities may also review the Following Too Closely Law. This law requires drivers to maintain a safe distance to allow adequate time to stop. On freeways, sudden braking or unexpected hazards can make insufficient spacing especially dangerous and lead to chain-reaction collisions.

Investigators may additionally consider the Unsafe Lane Change Law if evidence shows a vehicle changed lanes or moved without ensuring the maneuver could be completed safely. Abrupt lane changes at freeway speeds can quickly result in loss of control or secondary impacts. These statutes help CHP evaluate what may have led to the northbound 5 Freeway accident as evidence continues to be reviewed.
