(Santa Ana, CA) A woman who used a wheelchair died after being struck by a vehicle in a North Grand Avenue accident Friday evening.

Police said the collision occurred around 6:30 p.m. in the 600 block of North Grand Avenue. Officers arrived to reports of a pedestrian hit by a car and found the woman seriously injured. Paramedics transported her to a nearby hospital, where she later died.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department identified the victim as Sabrina Michelle Duran, 55. According to . Sgt. Gerard McCann, Duran used a wheelchair while crossing the westbound on Grand Avenue when the collision occurred.

Police said the driver involved initially left the scene but later returned and cooperated with investigators. Authorities did not arrest the driver at the scene. Officers said it will be up to prosecutors to determine whether charges will be filed as the investigation continues.

Investigators did not release details about the vehicle involved or whether lighting, speed, or traffic controls contributed to the crash. OCSD urge anyone who witnessed the crash to contact investigators as they continue reviewing evidence.

Analysis on the North Grand Avenue Accident

When a pedestrian using a mobility device is killed in a roadway collision, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews focus on driver responsibility, pedestrian right-of-way, and actions taken after a crash.

Because the driver initially left the scene, investigators will closely examine the Hit-and-Run Law. This law requires drivers involved in a collision causing injury or death to stop, provide identifying information, and render reasonable assistance. Leaving the scene, even briefly, can delay aid and complicate investigations.

Since the victim was crossing the roadway, authorities may also review the Duty of Care to Pedestrians Law. This law requires drivers to exercise due care to avoid colliding with pedestrians, including those using wheelchairs or other mobility devices. Drivers are expected to remain alert and cautious, especially in areas where pedestrians may cross outside marked intersections.

If speed or attentiveness is questioned, investigators may consider the Basic Speed Law. This law requires motorists to drive at speeds reasonable for traffic, visibility, and roadway conditions. Evening hours can present changing light conditions that demand additional caution. These statutes help officials evaluate what may have led to the North Grand Avenue accident as the investigation proceeds.

    Advice for the Family

If you have lost a loved one in a pedestrian collision, staying in contact with investigators can help you receive updates and obtain the official collision report when it becomes available.

You may also consider speaking with a legal professional experienced in fatal pedestrian cases to better understand your options. Emotional support is essential, and leaning on trusted friends, family members, or local grief counseling resources can provide comfort during an incredibly difficult time.
