(Long Beach, CA) A teenage boy was injured in a South Street collision Friday morning, December 19, after a vehicle struck him as he crossed the roadway.

Officers responded around 7:36 a.m. to the 1600 block of South Street at Walnut Avenue. When they arrived, they found the teen suffering upper-body injuries. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital, describing his injuries as non-life-threatening. Police say the boy had been crossing within a marked crosswalk when he a vehicle driven by an adult man struck him.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities suspect distracted driving as a possible factor, though the investigation is still underway.

Overview on the South Street Collision

When a pedestrian is struck while using a marked crosswalk, investigators often review the Right-of-Way in Crosswalks Law. Under this law, drivers must yield to pedestrians who are lawfully crossing the road, while pedestrians must also act with due regard for their own safety. Examining stopping distances, sightlines, and driver attention helps determine whether a right-of-way violation occurred.

Because investigators are considering distraction as a contributing factor, they may reference the Handheld Device Law. This statute prohibits drivers from holding or using a cellphone while operating a vehicle. Any momentary distraction can increase stopping distance and reduce reaction time, especially in areas with pedestrian traffic like South Street.

If speed becomes a question during the investigation, officers may look to the Basic Speed Law. This law requires motorists to drive at speeds that are reasonable for conditions, including morning visibility and school-hour pedestrian activity. Even modest increases in speed can significantly affect injury severity in pedestrian crashes such as the South Street collision.

    Support for the Family

If your family member was involved in this collision, you may request the official collision report from the Long Beach Police Department once it is completed. This report can clarify the circumstances and contributing factors.

You may also want to speak with a personal injury attorney experienced in pedestrian cases. They can help you understand your rights, navigate insurance claims, and pursue compensation for medical expenses and recovery needs.

Finally, consider reaching out to local support services or counseling resources, which can offer guidance and emotional support as your family works through the aftermath of this frightening event.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
