(San Diego, CA) A 60-year-old bicyclist was killed Wednesday evening in a Salmon River Road accident after being struck by a vehicle in Rancho Peñasquitos.

The collision happened around 5:35 p.m. in the 12900 block of Salmon River Road. Investigators say a 51-year-old woman driving a northbound Toyota Camry collided with the rear tire of the cyclist. The driver reportedly told officers she “did not see” the bicyclist. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

SDPD said alcohol did not appear to be a factor. Traffic Division officers work to investigate the circumstances, and authorities urge anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Analysis on the Salmon River Road Accident

When a bicyclist is struck by a vehicle, investigators often reference the Three Feet for Safety Act. This law requires drivers to give cyclists at least three feet of clearance when passing and to exercise caution when sharing the roadway. In this case, officials will examine whether the driver maintained a safe distance and whether visibility or roadway conditions contributed to the impact.

Police may also consider the Basic Speed Law. This statute requires motorists to travel at speeds that are reasonable for conditions such as lighting, curves, and traffic flow.  Driving too fast for evening conditions can reduce a driver’s ability to see a cyclist ahead.

Additionally, investigators sometimes review the Bicycle Roadway Safety Law, which outlines how cyclists should ride as close to the right-hand side as practicable. The statute helps investigators determine how both parties were using the roadway leading up to the Salmon River Road accident.

    Guidance for the Family

If you are a loved one of the bicyclist, you should request the official collision report from the San Diego Police Department once it becomes available. It can provide important clarity about how the crash unfolded.

You may also consider speaking with a wrongful death attorney who can guide you through potential claims related to funeral expenses, loss of support, and other financial impacts.

Above all, take time to care for yourselves and lean on family, friends, and San Diego–area grief support resources. Sudden loss is devastating, and compassionate support can help your family through the difficult days ahead.
