(San Diego, CA) An 89-year-old woman was killed late Tuesday morning, November 18, in an Imperial Avenue crash after her car was struck by an SUV while making a turn in the Jamacha area.
According to the San Diego Police Department, the collision occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Imperial Avenue and Viewcrest Drive. Investigators said Lucy Prewitt Starkes drove a Volkswagen Jetta westbound on Imperial Avenue. While attempting to make a left turn, an oncoming Ford Excursion collided with her vehicle.
Emergency responders arrived and provided aid but pronounced Starkes dead at the scene from her injuries. The driver of the Ford Excursion did not sustain injuries, and police said alcohol and drugs did not contribute to the crash.
Overview on the Imperial Avenue Crash
In left-turn collisions, investigators often review several California traffic laws to determine fault and contributing factors. The Left-Turn or Yield Law requires drivers turning left to yield to oncoming traffic until it is safe to complete the turn. Failure to properly gauge distance or speed can lead to serious or fatal impacts.
The Duty to Exercise Due Care Law requires all drivers to operate with caution and take reasonable measures to avoid collisions, even when they have the right-of-way.
Finally, the Basic Speed Law mandates that motorists travel at a speed that is reasonable and safe for roadway and visibility conditions. These laws will guide investigators in determining the factors that led to the Imperial Avenue crash.
