(Escondido, CA) Aiden Antonio Torres de Paz, 11, was struck and killed in a hit-and-run on Tuesday evening, November 26, in an East Washington Avenue crash.

According to Lt. Craig Miller of the Escondido Police Department, officers responded around 5 p.m. to the 400 block of East Washington Avenue, near Hickory Street. They received reports of a child struck by a vehicle.

Investigators said Aiden was retrieving a soccer ball in the street in front of his home. As he picked up the ball, a passing vehicle struck him. The driver fled the scene without stopping to render aid.

Paramedics transported Aiden to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, where he succumbed to his injuries on Thanksgiving morning.

Police later identified and arrested Hector Balderas Amador, 44, of Escondido. Amador. Authorities booked him into the Vista Detention Facility on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing death. He is being held on $50,000 bail, with an arraignment set for Wednesday in Vista Superior Court.

Overview on the East Washington Avenue Crash

In fatal hit-and-run cases, investigators typically review several major California traffic laws to determine criminal liability. The Hit-and-Run Statute requires any driver involved in a collision resulting in injury or death to immediately stop, identify themselves, and render reasonable assistance to the victim. Fleeing the scene, as in this case, can result in felony charges and significant prison time.

The Duty of Care Law also applies, requiring drivers to remain alert for pedestrians near residential areas and intersections. Drivers must reduce speed and take precautions when visibility or roadway conditions make pedestrian activity likely.

Finally, the Basic Speed Law mandates that motorists drive at a safe speed for conditions, including in neighborhoods where children may be playing. Violating these principles can contribute to both criminal and civil liability in tragedies like the East Washington Avenue crash.

    Support for Aiden’s Family

The family of Aiden Antonio Torres De Paz is encouraged to stay in contact with the Escondido Police Department for updates and to request a copy of the official collision report once available. This document will provide crucial details about the investigation and any future court proceedings.

Families affected by fatal hit-and-run cases may also seek assistance through the California Victim Compensation Board (CalVCB), which can help with funeral expenses, medical bills, and counseling services.

Additionally, consulting with a wrongful-death attorney may help the family understand their rights and explore options for justice and financial recovery.

Above all, take time to seek emotional and community support. Local organizations such as Escondido’s Trauma Intervention Program (TIP) and grief counseling centers in San Diego County can provide compassionate assistance during this unimaginable time.
