(Lancaster, CA) A woman was killed Monday evening, November 24, in an Avenue I hit-and-run after being struck by an SUV while crossing the street outside a crosswalk, authorities said.

According to Detective Ryan Ament of the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station, the crash occurred around 5:14 p.m. near the intersection of Avenue I and Kingtree Avenue. A preliminary investigation found that the woman walked southbound across Avenue I at the time of the collision. At some point, a silver Honda SUV traveling westbound struck her.

The driver did not stop to render aid or contact authorities and fled the scene, investigators said. Paramedics transported the woman to a hospital, where doctors later pronounced her dead. Her identity has not yet been released pending family notification.

Detectives are still working to determine whether speed or impairment played a role in the crash. Anyone with information is urged to contact Lancaster traffic investigators at 661-948-8466.

Overview on the Avenue I Hit-and-Run

Hit-and-run cases involving pedestrians are among the most serious traffic crimes under California law. Authorities will first examine the Hit-and-Run Statute. This mandates that drivers involved in a collision causing injury or death must immediately stop, render reasonable assistance, and notify law enforcement. Leaving the scene constitutes a felony offense.

Additionally, the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law will come into consideration. This emphasizes that even when pedestrians cross outside designated crosswalks, motorists must exercise due care to avoid striking them. This includes slowing down and remaining vigilant in residential or high-traffic areas.

Investigators will also review the Basic Speed Law, which requires all drivers to maintain speeds safe for existing road and visibility conditions. This law helps determine whether unsafe driving contributed to the fatal collision on Avenue I.

    Support for the Family

Families affected by fatal hit-and-run collisions should stay in close contact with the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station to receive updates and obtain the official collision report once available. This document will provide key investigative details and assist with insurance or legal proceedings.

It may also be beneficial to consult a wrongful-death attorney who can guide the family through legal steps, including compensation for funeral expenses and emotional loss.

Finally, grief counseling and victim support services through Los Angeles County Victim Assistance Programs are available to help families cope with the emotional and practical challenges following such a devastating incident.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
