(Phoenix, AZ) One person was killed and another seriously injured Tuesday afternoon, November 18, in an Interstate 17 Freeway collision in north Phoenix, authorities said.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred near the Jomax Road exit. The collision involved two vehicles, one of which overturned as a result of the crash.

First responders arrived to find at least one person dead at the scene. They also found another suffering from life-threatening injuries. First responders transported that individual to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The crash heavily impacted the northbound lanes of I-17, causing extended traffic delays during the afternoon. DPS troopers are investigating the cause of the collision, including whether speed or lane changes played a role.

Overview on the Interstate 17 Freeway Collision

In rollover crashes involving multiple vehicles, investigators commonly reference the Basic Speed Law which requires drivers to operate at speeds that are reasonable and prudent for existing conditions. Excessive or unsafe speed is one of the leading causes of rollover and loss-of-control collisions.

The Unsafe Lane Change Law may also apply if a sudden or improper lane movement contributed to the crash. Drivers must remain within a single lane and only move when it is safe to do so.

If distraction or fatigue played a part, the Reckless Driving Law, often associated with reckless or negligent driving, may be considered. These statutes guide DPS investigators as they determine the events that led to the Interstate 17 Freeway collision.

    Support for the Family

If your loved one was involved in this tragedy, you should stay in contact with the Arizona Department of Public Safety for updates and request a copy of the official collision report once available. This report will provide key details about the investigation.

When the time feels right, consider speaking with a wrongful-death or injury attorney who understands freeway crash cases. They can help explain your legal rights and explore options for compensation or accountability.

Lastly, lean on friends, family, and community support. Local grief counseling centers and faith-based organizations in Phoenix can provide care and guidance as you cope with the emotional aftermath of this sudden loss.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
