(Bonsall, CA) A pedestrian was struck and killed early Thursday morning in a hit-and-run Interstate 15 collision in northern San Diego County, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. on the northbound lanes of Interstate 15 near Old Highway 395, according to the California Highway Patrol. Officers said a vehicle struck a man then drove off, fleeing the sene.

Investigators believe the vehicle involved may have been a Mazda with front-end and undercarriage damage. Authorities have not released the victim’s name, pending notification of family. CHP officers are searching for the driver and have asked anyone with information to contact Public Affairs Officer Hunter Gerber at 760-643-3400.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim.

Analysis on the Interstate 15 Collision

Hit-and-run fatalities on freeways are particularly dangerous because of high speeds and limited visibility. Authorities will examine vehicle debris, witness reports, and nearby traffic cameras to identify the suspect vehicle and determine what caused the impact.

The most relevant law in this case is the Hit-and-Run Statute. It requires any driver involved in an injury or fatal crash to stop immediately, provide identification, and render aid. Failing to do so is a felony offense. Even if a driver panics and leaves the scene, returning later does not erase criminal liability.

Because the collision involved a pedestrian, California Vehicle Code 21954 may also be reviewed. This statute reminds pedestrians crossing freeways or outside crosswalks to yield to vehicles. Drivers are also required to adhere to pedestrians to follow California pedestrian laws. Investigators will assess whether the victim was on the roadway and how visibility or driver alertness factored into the crash.

Authorities will continue collecting evidence and witness accounts to determine what led to the Interstate 15 collision. Investigators will work to locate the driver responsible for leaving the scene.

    Support for the Family

If you are a relative of the victim, you deserve answers and support. You can contact the California Highway Patrol’s Oceanside Area Office to request updates or a copy of the collision report.

Families may also find help through the San Diego County Victim Assistance Program, which offers counseling, legal guidance, and financial support. Speaking with a wrongful death attorney experienced in hit-and-run cases can also help you explore your options and ensure your loved one’s story is heard.

If you have any concerns about navigating the legal process surrounding this incident, call 866-883-4318 to speak with a lawyer.
