(San Rafael, CA) A crash temporarily blocked all southbound lanes in a Highway 101 accident in San Rafael on Monday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers responded just before 5 p.m. to reports of a collision on southbound Highway 101, south of Freitas Parkway. Authorities closed all lanes as emergency crews arrived and began clearing the scene. By 5:40 p.m., Caltrans reported that the two right lanes had reopened, while the left lanes remained closed for cleanup and inspection.

Police fully reopened all lanes shortly before 6 p.m. It remains unclear how many vehicles were involved or if any injuries were reported. The CHP has not yet released additional details about the cause of the crash.

Overview on the Highway 101 Accident

Even when a crash causes no serious injuries, incidents like this highlight how quickly freeway traffic can be disrupted. Investigators typically review several key traffic laws to understand what led to a lane-blocking collision.

If unsafe speed or sudden braking contributed to the crash, officers may look at the Basic Speed Law. This prohibits driving faster than is reasonable for current traffic, weather, or roadway conditions. Heavy congestion and merging lanes near Freitas Parkway often require slower speeds to prevent chain-reaction collisions.

When lane changes or merging maneuvers are involved, California Vehicle Code 21658 may also be reviewed. This rule requires drivers to maintain their lane and change lanes only when it is safe to do so. A driver moving too quickly between lanes or misjudging distance in traffic can easily trigger a multi-vehicle crash, especially during rush hour.

Authorities will likely evaluate these factors while determining how the Highway 101 accident occurred and how to prevent similar traffic disruptions in the future.

    Guidance for the Victim(s)

If this incident affected you or a loved one, it’s understandable to feel shaken. You can obtain an official CHP accident report to clarify what happened and whether your vehicle sustained damage or delays due to the closure.

If injuries occurred, consider contacting a personal injury attorney familiar with freeway collisions to explore your options. You can also follow Caltrans and CHP updates for future road safety alerts to stay informed while traveling through San Rafael and other busy Bay Area corridors.
