(Chula Vista, CA) A 77-year-old man was struck and killed early Wednesday morning in a L Street crash in Chula Vista, authorities said.

The collision occurred around 6:30 a.m. in the 600 block of L Street. Upon investigating, authorities learned a 2014 Toyota Corolla traveling eastbound struck a pedestrian. The victim stood in the roadway at the time of the crash, according to Chula Vista Police Officer Carson Tabor.

Emergency responders arrived quickly but pronounced the man dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released pending notification of his family. The driver of the Corolla remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

According to Officer Tabor, intoxication does not appear to have been a factor in the crash. Investigators are still determining the cause and whether other conditions, such as lighting or pedestrian movement, played a role.

Perspective on the L Street Crash

Fatal pedestrian crashes like this one leave families and communities in disbelief. While police continue to investigate, their findings will likely consider several California traffic laws to determine how this crash happened.

When a pedestrian is struck in or near the roadway, officers often review California Vehicle Code 21950. This requires drivers to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians crossing the street within a marked or unmarked crosswalk. The law also reminds pedestrians not to step into the path of a vehicle so close that it creates an immediate hazard. Investigators will look at the pedestrian’s position on L Street and the driver’s ability to stop or avoid the collision.

If visibility or driver awareness played a role, the Basic Speed Law could also come into play. This rule prohibits driving faster than is safe for current conditions. Even when traveling below the posted speed limit, drivers must adjust their speed for lighting, traffic, and pedestrian presence, especially in residential or commercial areas. These considerations together help officials determine what led to the L Street crash.

    Support for the Family

If your relative was the one in this crash, you deserve care, answers, and guidance. You can request the police report from the Chula Vista Police Department once the investigation concludes and seek support from a wrongful death attorney who understands pedestrian safety cases.

You may also contact the San Diego County Victim Assistance Program, which provides counseling and help with funeral or medical expenses. Taking small, steady steps—like speaking with investigators and leaning on trusted family members—can help you begin the process of healing after such a difficult loss.
