(Imperial County, CA) A 14-year-old teen riding an electric motorcycle died in a Silsbee Road crash in Imperial County.

On Friday, August 22, at about 7:40 p.m., the Silsbee Road crash occurred. According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened in the area of Silsbee Road and Aten Road.

Upon investigating, CHP officers learned a 14-year-old boy rode an electric motorcycle westbound on Aten Road. At the same time, a 17-year-old boy drove a white Toyota Tacoma eastbound on Aten Road. At Silsbee Road, the e-bike and the Tacoma crashed. The collision caused the teen to be ejected from the bike. The Tacoma driver pulled over and called 911, waiting for officers to arrive.

When authorities arrived at the Silsbee Road crash site, they found the boy with serious injuries. Paramedics came and transported the boy to El Centro Regional Medical Center. Despite making it to the hospital, the 14-year-old boy died. According to the CHP, they determined impairment to not be a factor leading to the crash. The driver of the Tacoma did not sustain any injuries. Additionally, the officers learned the driver wore a seatbelt while the e-bike rider wore a helmet. Officers continue to investigate the cause.

Legal Opinion on the Silsbee Road Crash

A lawyer speaks to a client regarding an accident.

The Silsbee Road crash raises legal concerns, especially since it involved an electric motorcycle. Under California Vehicle Code 21207.5, certain e-bikes and motor-driven cycles cannot be operated on roadways unless they meet specific equipment standards. Additionally, VEH 21802 requires drivers entering or crossing an intersection to yield the right of way to approaching vehicles.

Investigators will need to determine whether the collision resulted from right-of-way issues or speed. The fact that both boys were teenagers adds to the complexity. Minors cannot legally operate all classes of motor-driven cycles. Liability may extend to the parents or guardians of the drivers under California’s Parental Responsibility laws if negligence is proven in the Silsbee Road crash.

    What the Family Can Do

The family of the 14-year-old has the right to bring a wrongful death claim under California Code of Civil Procedure 377.60. This claim allows close relatives to pursue compensation for funeral expenses, emotional suffering, and the loss of companionship. Because the Tacoma driver was also a minor, his parents’ auto insurance policy would likely be the primary source of compensation.

A wrongful death attorney can help by obtaining the full CHP report on the Silsbee Road crash. They can also gather witness statements, review roadway conditions, and examine whether the electric motorcycle was street-legal for that area. The attorney may also investigate whether road design or visibility contributed to the crash, which could potentially involve claims against public agencies. Civil law provides a way for the grieving family to hold responsible parties accountable and secure financial support. Acting quickly is critical to preserve evidence and ensure all possible legal options remain open.

We at Accident News Now extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim. We know this is a difficult time as you mourn the tragic and sudden loss of a loved one.
