(San Diego, CA) A motorcyclist sustained serious injuries in a Market Street hit and run in the Mount Hope community of San Diego.

On Saturday, August 23, at around 3 a.m., the Market Street hit and run occurred. According to the San Diego Police Department, it happened at the 3500 block of Market Street.

When police investigated, they learned a Ford Fusion sped eastbound on Market Street. All of a sudden, the Ford rear-ended a motorcycle driven by a 45-year-old. As a result, it caused the motorcyclist to crash, the driver of the Ford fleeing the scene.

By the time paramedics arrived, they transported the motorcyclist to a hospital. First responders determined he suffered serious brain injuries as well as a fractured pelvis. Sometime later, authorities located the unoccupied Ford Fusion in National City. Police also found the driver, arresting them.

Legal Opinion on the Market Street Hit and Run

A lawyer speaks to a client regarding an accident.

This crash highlights the severe consequences of reckless driving and fleeing the scene. Leaving the scene of an injury crash violates California Vehicle Code 20001. This law makes it a felony to flee a accident site after causing injury or death. The law requires drivers to stop immediately, provide aid, and notify authorities. Failing to do so not only increase criminal liability but also shows disregard for human life.

The driver may also face charges under VEH 23103, which defines reckless driving as operating a vehicle with willful disregard for safety. Speeding and rear-ending a motorcycle, one of the most vulnerable types of vehicles on the road, falls under this definition. Since the driver fled, prosecutors may also consider hit-and-run DUI if authorities find alcohol or drugs to be involved. The motorcyclist, who suffered life-threatening injuries, faces a long recovery with significant medical expenses, loss of income, and lasting physical and emotional trauma.

    What the Victim Can Do

The injured rider has a strong personal injury claim against the Ford driver. Through this claim, he may seek compensation for hospital bills, surgeries, rehabilitation, pain and suffering, and lost wages. Because the crash involved hit-and-run and reckless behavior, the case may also qualify for punitive damages. A personal injury attorney can assist by obtaining the police report, reviewing crash scene evidence, and working with medical experts to document the long-term impact of the injuries. Since the driver abandoned the vehicle, their insurance coverage and financial resources will also be investigated.

The rider’s family should act quickly, as evidence and witness memories fade. Legal action ensures the driver is held accountable and provides the victim with the resources he will need for his recovery and long-term care. This case is a clear example of why California law treats hit-and-runs with such seriousness—because leaving a severely injured person behind is both unlawful and inhumane.
