Willits, CA (April 4, 2024) Rain and fog covered the area of Willits Bypass on Highway 101 on March 27th, as vehicles traveled to and from destinations. It was early morning, just after 1:30 a.m., to be exact, and the darkness did not help with the driving conditions. At approximately 1:38 a.m., a passenger van and a semi-truck crashed on this very stretch of highway. The crash left one person with life-threatening injuries, according to officers.
Initial investigation indicated that the passenger van was sitting in the traffic lane without using its headlights or taillights. Suddenly, a semi-truck with a full load came up on the passenger van and couldn’t see it. The driver of the semi, Geovanny Larreynaga, a Carmicheal resident, lost control of the semi-truck and ended up in the ditch. The truck’s load became untied and fell off the trailer, spilling all over the ditch beside the highway.
Grant Gosch, a Cottonwood resident, was driving the passenger van that was hit. Paramedics found him in the driver’s seat in serious condition. They determined that he had sustained life-threatening injuries in the collision and he was airlifted to Enloe Hospital in Chico to receive emergency medical care.
Crews had to clean debris and glass from the roadway and investigators gathered evidence and spoke to the semi-truck driver in hopes of figuring out what exactly happened on Willits Bypass that morning. A tow truck was called to remove the passenger van from the area, as well.
