(Ontario, CA) Two people were killed in a 10 Freeway collision late Sunday night, March 29, involving a big rig.

California Highway Patrol officers responded just before midnight to the westbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway west of Fourth Street. Investigators said the crash involved a semi-truck and multiple smaller vehicles. Emergency crews arrived to find several damaged vehicles across the roadway, including one that sustained major damage.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, and two others were transported to hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not released the identities of the victims. That information remained unknown as the investigation continued.

A SigAlert was issued shortly after 12:08 a.m., shutting down all westbound lanes and diverting traffic at Fourth Street and Vineyard Avenue. Tow trucks were called to remove the semi and several other vehicles. The far right lane reopened around 4:20 a.m., but officials have not said what led to the crash.

Analysis On The 10 Freeway Collision

When a fatal multi-vehicle crash involves a big rig, investigators review traffic laws to understand contributing factors. These reviews focus on speed, following distance, and lane movement without assigning fault prematurely.

Because large trucks require greater stopping distance, officers may examine the Following Distance Law. This law requires drivers to maintain a safe space between vehicles to avoid collisions. If traffic slowed suddenly, investigators will consider whether adequate distance was maintained. Reduced spacing can increase the severity of multi-vehicle crashes.

If speed played a role, authorities may review the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to travel at speeds that are safe for traffic and roadway conditions. Nighttime freeway driving can reduce visibility and reaction time. Investigators may evaluate whether speed contributed to the chain-reaction crash.

When multiple vehicles are involved, officers may also consider the Unsafe Lane Change Law. This law requires drivers to ensure lane movements can be made safely. If any vehicle changed lanes unexpectedly, it may have contributed to the collision sequence. These factors may help explain what led to the 10 Freeway collision.

    Advice for the Family

If you have lost a loved one in this crash, staying in contact with the California Highway Patrol can help you receive updates. You can request official reports once they are available to better understand the investigation findings.

You may also consider speaking with a qualified attorney who can help explain your options. In addition, support from family, friends, or grief counseling services can provide comfort during this difficult time.
