(Los Angeles, CA) At least three people were killed and several others were injured Thursday afternoon, February 5, when a vehicle crashed into a grocery store in a Westwood Boulevard collision.
Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded just after noon to the 99 Ranch Market at 1350 South Westwood Boulevard. Officials said a silver sedan left the roadway, went onto the sidewalk, and smashed through the glass windows of the market, coming to rest inside the bakery area. Three people died at the scene, and at least six others were transported to hospitals for treatment.
Fire officials reported that two of the injured suffered critical injuries, while others were treated for minor injuries. Authorities said several victims appeared to have been pinned beneath the vehicle before rescue crews could free them. The Los Angeles Police Department and fire officials described the incident as an accidental traffic collision and stated there was no indication of intentional conduct.
Investigators said the driver, described as an elderly woman, first struck a bicyclist about a block away before the vehicle continued toward the store. Officials did not release the condition of the bicyclist. Police said the driver remained at the scene, and authorities did not report any arrests. A large emergency response closed a stretch of Westwood Boulevard for several hours while crews worked inside the building.
The victims who died were identified as Deris Renjo, 42, a 55-year-old man, and a 30-year-old man. Authorities said two of the victims were store employees, while the third was believed to be a customer. Investigators did not release additional identifying details as the investigation continued.
Analysis on the Westwood Boulevard Collision
When a crash causes fatalities in a commercial area, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often examine vehicle control, speed, and driver response to unexpected roadway hazards.
Because the vehicle reportedly left the roadway and entered a sidewalk and building, investigators may examine the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to operate at speeds reasonable for traffic, visibility, and roadway conditions. Even at low speeds, loss of control near busy intersections can have devastating consequences.
If the sequence involving a bicyclist is part of the investigation, authorities may also review the Bicyclist Safety Law. This law places shared responsibilities on drivers and cyclists using public roadways. Investigators may assess how the initial collision influenced subsequent vehicle movement.
When a driver departs the roadway, officials often consider the Unsafe Turning Law. This law requires drivers to ensure any turning movement or change in direction can be made with reasonable safety. These statutes help investigators evaluate what may have led to the Westwood Boulevard collision as evidence is carefully reviewed.
