Overview on the University Avenue Crash
When a driver leaves the scene of a deadly collision, investigators immediately consider the Hit-and-Run Statute. This law requires any driver involved in an injury or fatal crash to stop, identify themselves, and assist the victim. Failing to do so is a felony offense and will be a key focus in this case.
Because the victim was a pedestrian, the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law is also relevant. It requires drivers to use due care to avoid hitting anyone crossing the street, even outside of a crosswalk. Investigators will likely examine lighting, visibility, and driver speed to determine whether that duty of care was ignored.
If speed was a contributing factor, the Basic Speed Law could apply. It prohibits driving faster than is safe for the current roadway, traffic, and visibility conditions. Each of these statutes helps investigators build a clearer picture of what led to the tragic University Avenue crash.
