(Los Angeles, CA) A man was killed Sunday night, February 15, after being struck in a crosswalk by an SUV that fled the scene in a south Western Avenue crash.

Los Angeles Police Department officers responded around 9:30 p.m. to South Western Avenue and West 82nd Street following reports of a pedestrian collision. When officers arrived, they learned the driver had been traveling northbound on Western Avenue and struck a man crossing westbound in a marked crosswalk at West 82nd Street. The victim was later identified as Javier Tamayo, 50, of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and pronounced Tamayo dead at the scene. Authorities did not release additional details about the vehicle’s speed or the traffic signal phase at the time of the collision. That information remained under investigation as detectives continued reviewing evidence.

Police described the suspect vehicle as a tan GMC SUV equipped with LED lights along the side running boards. Investigators said the SUV was last seen traveling eastbound on 81st Street from Western Avenue. The driver did not stop to render aid and left the area before officers arrived.

The LAPD South Traffic Division assumed responsibility for the investigation. Detectives urged anyone with information about the fatal hit-and-run to contact their office. Anonymous tips may also be submitted through L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers as officers work to identify and locate the driver.

Opinion on the South Western Avenue Crash

When a fatal hit-and-run occurs at a marked crosswalk, investigators review traffic safety laws to understand what factors may have contributed, without assigning fault prematurely. These reviews often focus on pedestrian right-of-way, driver attentiveness, and the legal duty to stop after a collision.

Because police said the victim was in a crosswalk, investigators may examine the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law. This law requires drivers to yield the right of way to pedestrians crossing within marked crosswalks. Authorities may review signal timing, visibility, and driver response to determine how the collision unfolded.

Since the driver allegedly fled the scene, officials will also closely review the Hit-and-Run Law. This statute requires drivers involved in collisions resulting in injury or death to stop immediately and provide identifying information and reasonable assistance. Leaving the scene can delay emergency care and complicate the investigation.

Investigators may further consider the Basic Speed Law if speed becomes a factor. This law requires drivers to operate at speeds reasonable for traffic, visibility, and roadway conditions. These combined considerations help guide LAPD’s evaluation of the south Western Avenue crash as detectives continue gathering evidence.

    What Tamayo’s Family Can Do

If you are related to Javier Tamayo or are supporting his loved ones, staying in contact with investigators can help you receive updates and request official police and coroner reports when they become available.

You may also consider speaking with a qualified legal professional to better understand your options following a fatal hit-and-run. Emotional support from family members, friends, clergy, or grief counseling services can also be important during a sudden and painful time.
