(Los Angeles, CA) Authorities identified Richmond Wilson, 79, as the pedestrian killed in a hit-and-run on West Imperial Highway in Harbor Gateway.
On October 30, at 11:10 p.m., police officers and paramedics responded to 726 W. Imperial Highway, between Hoover Street and Vermont Avenue. Authorities determined that Wilson was crossing the street when a vehicle traveling at high speed struck him. The driver fled without stopping, according to the Los Angeles Police Departmen.
Following the collision, Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner confirmed his death was due to traumatic injuries and publicly identified him on Monday, November 2.
Investigators blocked the street and searched the surrounding area for evidence that could lead to the driver. The vehicle had not been identified in the department’s initial account. The fatal hit-and-run remains under investigation.
Understanding the Imperial Highway Crash
The driver’s reported departure brings California Vehicle Code 20001 directly into consideration. It requires a driver involved in a collision causing another person’s injury or death to stop immediately and fulfill the required identification and assistance duties. That obligation applies regardless of who caused the initial collision.
Providing help is part of that responsibility. California Vehicle Code 20003 requires involved drivers to give identifying information and render reasonable assistance, including arranging medical transportation when necessary. Police said the driver left after striking Wilson rather than stopping to render aid.
