(San Diego, CA) A 33-year-old man was killed late Friday night, November 14, in a Hancock Street accident after being struck by a car while crossing against a signal in the city’s Midway District.
According to the San Diego Police Department, the collision occurred around 11:11 p.m. at Hancock Street and Camino Del Rio West. Investigators said the man ran eastbound across the intersection against a “don’t walk” signal. While he crossed, a northbound BMW driven by a 55-year-old woman struck the pedestrian.
The driver, who had a green light, stopped immediately and cooperated with police. Paramedics transported the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. SDPD Officer David O’Brien said alcohol did not play a role in the crash.
The department’s Traffic Division is investigating and asks anyone with information to contact 858-495-7800 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
Overview on the Hancock Street Accident
When a pedestrian enters an intersection against a signal, investigators typically review the Pedestrian Signal Law. This law prohibits pedestrians from crossing when a “don’t walk” or red hand symbol is displayed. However, it also requires drivers to remain alert and take reasonable steps to avoid a collision whenever possible.
The Basic Speed Law may also apply. Even when a driver has the right-of-way, this statute mandates that vehicles travel at speeds safe for road, lighting, and traffic conditions.
In addition, the Driver’s Duty of Care Law reinforces that motorists must use due caution to prevent striking pedestrians, even if the pedestrian is crossing unlawfully. These statutes will help SDPD investigators assess how the Hancock Street accident occurred and confirm that all factors have been properly evaluated.
