(Menifee, CA) A man identified as Geoff Bishop, 45, of Menifee was struck and killed early Tuesday morning, November 4, in a Southbound 215 Freeway crash after walking into traffic lanes, authorities said.

According to Officer Brian Seel of the California Highway Patrol Temecula office, the incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on the southbound 215 Freeway just south of McCall Boulevard. Preliminary reports indicated that Bishop entered the freeway for unknown reasons and began walking within the fast lane. Meanwhile, a 41-year-old driver in a 2014 Mercedes-Benz E350 traveled about 65 mph in the fast lane. When they approached Bishop, they were unable to stop or swerve in time, striking him with the front left side of the vehicle.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived within minutes but pronounced Bishop dead at the scene. The driver, a Menifee resident, did not sustain any injuries and cooperated with officers. CHP said it remains unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role, and an autopsy is pending. Anyone with information is urged to contact the CHP Temecula office at 951-466-4300.

Overview on the Southbound 215 Freeway Crash

When pedestrians are struck on freeways, investigators often consider the Pedestrian Prohibition Law. It prohibits pedestrians from walking along or within freeways except during emergencies. CHP will seek to determine why Mr. Bishop was on the roadway and whether outside factors contributed.

The Basic Speed Law may also be reviewed to confirm that the driver was traveling at a speed safe for nighttime and freeway conditions. Even when motorists drive within posted limits, sudden obstructions or poor visibility can make it difficult to avoid a collision.

In addition, the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law requires all drivers to remain alert and take reasonable precautions to avoid striking pedestrians. These laws will guide investigators in establishing the full circumstances of the Southbound 215 Freeway crash.

    Support for Bishop’s Family

You should remain in contact with Officer Brian Seel and the CHP Temecula office for updates on the investigation and the pending autopsy results. Requesting the official collision report can also help clarify what occurred.

When the time feels right, consider consulting with an attorney who handles freeway and pedestrian fatality cases. They can explain your family’s rights and potential next steps as the investigation continues.

Most importantly, take care of your emotional well-being. Lean on friends, relatives, and grief-support resources in Menifee and Riverside County as you process this sudden and heartbreaking loss of Geoff Bishop.
