(Los Angeles, CA) Eric Ramos, 24, died and three women were hospitalized after a Chicago Street collision in Boyle Heights on Sunday afternoon. Police later arrested the driver involved.

On Sunday, September 28, at about 4:20 p.m., Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded to Chicago Street and First Street after reports of a severe crash. A pickup truck heading westbound on First slammed into a parked vehicle, ejecting several passengers from the truck.

Authorities confirmed that Eric Ramos, who was seated in the front passenger seat, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Three women riding in the truck bed were thrown onto the roadway. Paramedics rushed them to a trauma center, with one in critical condition and two in serious condition. Firefighters also used hydraulic tools to rescue another victim trapped in the wreckage.

Police said the 25-year-old driver fled on foot after the crash but was later taken into custody. Witnesses reported that the driver was operating recklessly before the Chicago Street collision. Detectives are continuing to investigate whether alcohol or drugs contributed.

Ramos’ family set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses.

Legal Perspective on the Chicago Street Collision

A lawyer speaks to a client regarding an accident.

This tragedy involves several serious violations under California law. The combination of reckless driving, fleeing the scene, and causing a fatal crash makes this case legally significant. First, Vehicle Code 20001 requires any driver involved in an injury or fatal crash to remain at the scene, provide identification, and render aid. Fleeing the location makes the crime a felony hit-and-run, adding to both criminal penalties and civil liability.

Next, Vehicle Code 23103 addresses reckless driving. Witness accounts of dangerous driving before the crash suggests the driver acted in willful disregard for safety, creating clear liability. If alcohol or drugs are determined to be factors, Vehicle Code 23152 will apply. This law prohibits DUI, and when paired with reckless driving and hit-and-run, it could result in severe criminal charges such as a felony DUI.

What Eric Ramos’ Family Can Do

For the family of Eric Ramos, this loss is devastating. They may pursue a wrongful death claim, which can help cover funeral costs, loss of companionship, and the financial contributions Eric would have provided to loved ones.

The three women injured in the crash also have the right to file personal injury claims. These claims can seek damages for hospital bills, long-term treatment, lost wages, and the emotional trauma caused by the crash. Because the driver acted recklessly and attempted to flee, these claims may be even stronger.

It is important for the family to know that criminal charges against the driver do not replace civil remedies. Filing a lawsuit allows families to directly pursue justice and compensation. Preserving evidence such as police reports, medical records, and witness testimony will be critical to building a strong case.

The Chicago Street collision that took the life of Eric Ramos is a tragic reminder of how reckless actions can devastate families in seconds, leaving them searching for accountability and healing.
