(North Hollywood, CA) Two pedestrians were killed in a Colfax Avenue accident after a suspected DUI driver struck them early Sunday morning, April 12.

The crash occurred around 2:25 a.m. on Colfax Avenue, north of Calvert Street. Investigators said a gray Acura traveling northbound struck a man in his 30s and a woman in her 50s who had just exited a parked Toyota Camry. The Acura also collided with the Camry, which still had three occupants inside at the time.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, and the male pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was transported to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The three passengers inside the Camry suffered minor injuries, police said.

Authorities reported that the driver continued moving after the initial impact, eventually crashing into parked vehicles in a nearby driveway. The driver, identified as Vidal Cruz Jr., was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment before being booked. Officials stated the investigation indicated unsafe speed and alcohol impairment were factors. The case remains under investigation.

Overview of the Colfax Avenue Accident

When a fatal collision involves allegations of impairment and speed, investigators review traffic laws carefully to understand contributing factors without assigning final conclusions too early. These reviews often focus on driver behavior, roadway safety, and duty of care.

Because impairment is suspected, officers may examine the Driving Under the Influence Law. This law prohibits operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Impairment can reduce reaction time, judgment, and coordination, increasing the risk of severe collisions. Investigators will review evidence such as field observations and testing results.

If speed was a factor, authorities may also consider the Basic Speed Law. This law requires drivers to operate vehicles at speeds that are safe for roadway and traffic conditions. Excessive speed can increase both the likelihood of a crash and the severity of injuries. In situations involving pedestrians, higher speeds often lead to more serious outcomes.

When pedestrians are present near parked vehicles, police may review the Pedestrian Right-of-Way Law. This law requires drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and exercise due care to avoid collisions. Investigators will evaluate where the pedestrians were positioned and whether the driver had an opportunity to avoid the impact. These factors are often central to understanding a Colfax Avenue accident.
